Camera Settings

You can adjust several camera related settings on the Camera settings screen.

Recording vs Streaming formats

Recordings made by SportStream Camera will use the camera format as set. When streaming, the stream format may be different from the camera format, depending on the stream settings. The app will adjust the video to the stream settings for the live stream.

If you are not recording, it is most efficient to set the camera format to the same format as the live stream.

If you are recording, set the camera format to the format you want to record.

The camera resolution and frame rate should be at least what is being streamed, for best quality.

Camera Format Settings

The following settings can be adjusted to change the camera format.

Video Resolution

You can set the camera to 720p, 1080p of 4K resolution.

4K resolution

While the app can record games in 4K, trying to record in 4K while simultaneously streaming will overwhelm most devices. We do not recommend trying to record in 4K while streaming as the app will likely be terminated by iOS for over-utilizing resources.

We are working on this and hope to have support for 4K recording while streaming in a future release.

Frames per Second

SportStream Camera currently supports camera framerates of 30 or 60 frames per second.

Streaming Frame Rate

Even if you are streaming at 30fps, setting the camera to 60fps can be useful. For example, if you are playing replays in slow motion, they will play at half the camera frame rate. So if you are streaming at 30fps and the cemera is at 30fps, replays will play back at 15fps, making them appear less smooth. If the camera is set to 60fps, replays will play back at 30fps, making them look smooth.

Color Format

The camera color format can be set to 420f (full range) or 420v (video range). 420f provides more accurate color detail for recording. 420v is more efficient for converting to streaming (as the format will be converted to 420f when encoding the stream). In almost all cases, 420v is preferred.

Autofocus Type

Supported camera autofocus types are Contrast and Phase. Phase is always preferred - contrast autofocus mode will constantly refocus the camera causing your stream to go out of focus quickly every few seconds.

Some older devices do not support Phase autofocus at higher resolutions or framerates, so you may be forced to choose Contrast in order to use the desired format.

Contrast Autofocus

In some cases, you may be able to use the focus lock on the main camera screen to lock focus, preventing the contrast autofocus from engaging. This will eliminate the constant focus shifts, as long as constant focus is suitable for your subject distance.

Camera Stabilization

You can enable the built in camera stabilization on your device to reduce video shakiness. We recommend enabling camera stabilization for almost all scenarios, unless your camera is securely mounted and won't be moving during the stream.
